Robert Penner, the new president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 73, already has plans for his term mapped out. "I hope to work with the executive, the members and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary," said Penner, "to make the Legion more viable, attract more people, increase our membership and to have fun at the same time." Legion members elected Penner president last week over Andy Stewart, the only other candidate. Penner, who was previously president for two years in the late 1990s, said he was asked to run again by a number of veterans and other supporters. He has been a Legion member for the past 30 years, and also served in the now-defunct 21 Field Engineer Squadron in Flin Flon for about four years in the 1970s. Penner feels a personal connection to the Legion movement, as his father, Walter, served in the Second World War. The new president complimented the executive with whom he will work throughout the year, saying that good people were elected. "They know what it's all about and everybody seems to be enthused and energetic," he said. Penner replaces Grant Adams, who served as president from 2000-2003 and chose not to run again. Adams joined the local Legion around 1972 as an associate member. His father, Josh, served in the Second World War from 1941-1945. The new Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 73 executive is as follows: President - Robert Penner First Vice-President - Jack Rigby Second Vice-President - John Crawford Executive - Ron Baschuk; Cindy Best; Robert Collacott; Deb Quickfall Sgt-At-Arms - Don Zollen (acclaimed) The installation of the new executive is tentatively slated for Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Legion Hall. Meanwhile, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary is slated to elect its new executive on Dec. 9.
