A parliamentary cabinet shuffle has led to the creation of a new post that could help Flin Flon and other small communities.

During the regular rotation of cabinet positions, Nova Scotia MP Bernadette Jordan was named as Canada’s first minister of rural economic development. In the new position, Jordan’s main job will be to oversee a nationwide development strategy for rural communities, including bringing high-speed internet to remote rural areas, covering infrastructure concerns and finding ways to promote industry and employment.

A federal portfolio covering rural development has not existed at the federal level since 1969.

Jordan worked as a development officer in Nova Scotia before being elected to the House of Commons in 2015.
