Saskatchewan's official opposition is calling on the province to take action to stem declining First Nations and M_tis employment. The number of First Nations people working in Saskatchewan is down 1,400 from last year at this time, while the number of M_tis people employed has dropped 1,500, according to new information from Statistics Canada. This marks the third consecutive month that the jobs report has shown a year-over-year decline in the number of First Nations and M_tis people employed in Saskatchewan. The unemployment rate has climbed to 21.3 per cent for First Nations people and 10 per cent for M_tis people. 'I can't help but wonder how much better the job situation would be for First Nations and M_tis people in our province if the Sask Party government actually helped to connect them with good jobs,' Cam Broten, NDP employment critic, said in a news release. The NDP said the province cut several important job training and employment development programs in its 2010 budget, including the Aboriginal Employment Development Program. The Sask Party government has defended its record on job-creation and in working to ensure labour force participation from all sectors of the population.
