Manitoba students have been challenged to use their artistic and creative talents to design cards of appreciation directed to Manitoba's farmers as part of the first provincial Agriculture Awareness Day on March 15, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced yesterday. "In this contest we want to encourage students to think about how their food is produced and where it comes from," said Wowchuk. "The design of the cards will show their appreciation to hard-working farm families who raise the food that is served at tables across the province and throughout the world." The Thank You Farmer contest is open to all students in grades 5 and 6. Entries will be displayed in the Rotunda of the Legislative Building as part of Manitoba Agriculture Awareness Day celebrations. Following the contest, the cards will be sent to farm families throughout the province by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiative's GO Centres and GO Offices. The winning classroom will be given the opportunity to participate in Agriculture Awareness Day activities at the Legislative Building on March 15 and present their cards to producers at a special luncheon honouring Manitoba farmers. The deadline for receiving contest entries is March 4. For information on entering, phone 1-866-MANITOBA (1-866-626-4862).
