Businessman Kevin Schanowski is the newest member of Denare Beach council after eking out a narrow victory in this week's by-election. Just five votes were the difference between Schanowski and his nearest challenger, underscoring the importance of every last tally. One of five candidates for the vacant council seat, Schanowski received 71 tallies, or 32 per cent of the popular vote. He was closely followed by Anne Schiltroth, who had 66 votes. Also running were Wanda Ginnell (57 votes), Shane Madarash (15) and Paul Ballentyne (13). Returning officer Bev Wheeler said the turnout of 222 voters was "fantastic," adding that she was pleased to see the candidates undertake a lot of campaigning. Schanowski ran on a platform that stressed the importance of economic development and opportunities for youth. He will occupy his council seat for the remaining two years of the three-year term left vacant by Karen Thomson's departure to Thompson. The new alderman joins Grant Adams, Roland Chretien, Wayne Elliott, Shirley Evans, Douglas Schaff and Mayor Carl Lentowicz at the council table.
