Neighbours’ gifts help community

Norther Neighbours Foundation grants range from archives to youth darts

Worthwhile causes across the Flin Flon region are benefitting from over $60,000 in support. That’s how much the Northern Neighbours Foundation, Moffat Family Fund and Youth In Philanthropy collectively donated to community projects last week.

“We’re really proud of our foundation and the things we can do,” Jane Robillard, president of the Northern Neighbours Foundation, told assembled recipients.

Representatives from 16 recipient organizations gathered at Flin Flon City Hall Council Chambers on July 9 to accept donations and give thanks for the financial aid.

The Northern Neighbours Foundation, drawing from its general fund, presented donations totalling $23,109:

• $7,500 to the Flin Flon Ski Club for trail work.

• $5,000 to the Flin Flon School Division for the next phase of upgrades at Queen’s Park.

• $4,200 to the Cranberry Portage Heritage Museum for archival preservation.

• $2,500 to the Flin Flon and District Environment Council , which operates the Recycling Centre, for a new hot water tank and a new loading door.

• $2,409 to the NorVA Centre for tools, a toolbox and an etching printer with accessories.

• $1,500 to the Flin Flon Station Museum for a computer and printer.

Grants from the Moffat Family Fund, awarded through the Northern Neighbours Foundation, totalled $37,446:

• $10,580 to the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre to purchase a Smart Board for the Aboriginal Head Start Initiative as well as furniture for the hostel.

• $5,487 to the Denare Beach Recreation Board for an indoor climbing wall to be installed at the Denareplex.

• $5,000 to support the Walking With Our Sisters art installation that was recently in Flin Flon, where it was viewed by nearly 800 people.

• $4,000 to the Flin Flon Junior Rifle Club for new target rifles and sights.

• $3,500 to the 2328 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. sponsor group for camping equipment.

• $3,165 to the new Flin Flon Pentecostal Assembly Youth Dart Club.

• $2,923 to the Sherridon Garden Committee for the construction of a community gazebo.

• $2,791 to the Vocational Training Centre for a copier.

Youth In Philanthropy, a n
ew group involving the Northern Neighbours Foundation,
Thomas Sill Foundation and Hapnot Collegiate, presented two donations:

• $1,000 to Habitat 53°, the Flin Flon branch of Habitat for Humanity, to assist with housing construction.

• $1,000 to the Lord’s Bounty Food Bank for a new freezer.
