This past weekend, the Town of Snow Lake hosted its 4th Annual Fishing Derby. Despite slushy conditions on Snow Lake, derby organizer (recreation director) Stephanie Foy stated that the turnout was impressive, with 52 anglers taking part. Foy added that the weather was cooperative with above zero temperatures; however, not everything went as well as it could have. "The only thing missing from this perfect day for fishing was fish," said Foy. "Much to the disappointment of everyone, not one single one was caught." Nevertheless the recreation director did state that most everyone seemed to be out on the lake as much for the friendship as they were for the fishing. "Many of the participants busied themselves with conversation waiting for the fish to bite," said Foy. Even though there weren't any fish caught that would claim prizes, anglers didn't go home empty handed. All the prizes were drawn for and the winners were: Blair Mclaughlin, who claimed the big prize, an eight inch Eskimo Power Ice Auger, and Bob Walker who walked away with a filleting knife set. In acknowledging the success of the 2003 derby, Foy hoped that next year's gathering would at least see some fish caught. Notwithstanding the lack of fish this year, she stated that the derby's success was due mostly to the support she received from: The Town of Snow Lake Works Crew, The Snow Lake Sno-drifters, Lawrence Samborski and Sonath Building Center. Still on fishing, but now talking about a big one that was landed. Susan Brew, who along with husband Tony own Wekusko Falls Lodge, landed a 38 and 1/4 inch Lake Trout through the ice on Reed Lake last weekend. The trout was almost as big as her, but she brought him in all by herself. Moving on to the mining industry. In a follow-up to their recent one-year of no lost time accidents, it was announced just this week that The New Britannia Mine has won the 2003 John T. Ryan National Award for Lowest Accident Frequency. Congratulations go out to the mine management and their workforce. On a serious note, Snow Lake citizens were saddened to hear of the passing of the matriarch of a long time Snow Lake family. Lavern Milburn passed away in Winnipeg on April 2nd. Funeral services were held on April 6th in the Snow Lake Elks Hall. Interment will follow on Thursday April 8th near Endeavour, Saskatchewan. Mrs. Milburn was the husband of Don Milburn, mother of former Bomber, Joe Milburn and grandmother of past Bomber captain Marc Milburn and assistant captain Donald Milburn.
