Another exciting and enjoyable Cordwood Weekend has come and gone. And not just any bonspiel either, but the 50th Anniversary Cordwood Bonspiel! Along with a couple of hundred chocolate and Pepsi fueled kids, one mainstay of the cordwood is the name tag contest. It sees grade 6 kids, and in some cases parents, put together name tags for the entire team, with judging of the name tags taking place during the weekend. However, in recognition of this milestone event, organizers added several new components to the weekend of revelry. There was a 'Wall of Memories' which consisted of pictures and team lists from bonspiels in the near and distant past. There were even some old name tags that people such as Jim Wooley and Jessie Stabback had kept as mementos. And with a new spin on an old rock (so to speak), the cordwood committee brought back the 'Decorated Rock' contest. Winners in the Name Tag Contest were: Ryan Langan, Kourtney Kerelation, Jeff Cann, Tegan Armsworthy, Joelee Rudd, Rebecca Hyde, Anna Roberts and Brooke Galiz. Winners in the Rock Decorating Contest were: K - Ceara Turnbull and Cassidy Gibbons; grade 1 - Kade Korchinski and Shelby Stoupe; grade 2 - Jolene Byblow and Hayley Turnbull; grade 3 - Boyd Langan and Taiya Korchinski; grade 4 - Kelsey Cann and Shyla Armsworthy; grade 5 - Kristine Anderstedt and Elaine Hyde; grade 6 - Daniel Stoltz and Jenny Oleksuk. Winning teams in the bonspiel were: First Event: 1st - Joey Major rink; 2nd - Ellen Hornyak rink; 3rd - Tyler Arsenault rink; 4th - Nasya Hughes rink. Second Event: 1st - Drake Campbell rink; 2nd - Rebecca Hyde rink; 3rd - Celine Leclair rink; 4th - Anna Roberts rink. Third Event: 1st - Zack Lipton rink; 2nd - Brooke Galiz rink; 3rd - Caitlyn Borchardt rink; 4th - Kourtney Kerelation rink. Fourth Event: 1st - Tanner Longmuir rink; 2nd - Kathleen Deduke rink; 3rd - Ryan Langan rink; 4th - Ara Stoupe rink. It should be noted that this perennial right of spring has become a weekend that not only the children of Snow Lake look forward to, but one that their parents eagerly await as well. This results from an initiative by the J.H. Kerr School Climate Committee called the Adult Cordwood. The Adult Cordwood drew one more team than the kids' bonspiel did this year. Having curled in it myself, I can tell you in all honesty that there is no differentiating between the antics of either group. Adults or kids, there were people throwing murderous takeout weight, dusting their brooms off in front of rocks (in order to slow them down), and entire teams sweeping inside the house. But, hey Ð I guess that's what makes it so much fun! Winners in the two events of the Adult Cordwood were: First Event: 1st - Lyn McDougall, Brian McDougall, John Kerr and Cathy Stabback; 2nd - Robin Turnbull, Teri Olafson, Joey Shapka and Tara Semenuik. Second Event: 1st - Shannon Dayson, Veronica Dayson, Samantha Turnbull and Teri Titanich; 2nd - Amy Otto, Kayla Donaldson, Carly Monias and Tony Monias. A great idea and a great time. Kudos to the Cordwood Committee and JHK Climate Committee.
