Hair wasn't the only thing dropping at J.H. Kerr School's March 1 assembly. Frontier School Division's Area #4 Superintendent, Gary Wickens, was also in attendance and on behalf of the division, he dropped some praise and a healthy helping of cash on a few of the school's deserving students. Wickens came to announce winners in the School Division's province wide 2004 Juried Art Show; however, he no doubt appreciated the chance to also witness the school's principal losing his wavy locks. In announcing the winners, Wickens informed the crowd of students, staff, and parents that there were 18 winners province-wide in this year's art show. "Fourteen of those eighteen winners came from Area Four," said Wickens. "And five of those fourteen came from J.H. Kerr." The superintendent further advised that J.H. Kerr had the most entries of any school in the entire division. "For this, I must give credit to the school's art teacher, Mr. Steve Deighton," he said. The winners were: - Bailey Galiz, first in grades 7 - 9 drawing for her piece titled 'Hollow Days'; - Shay Finlay, first in S2 - S4 drawing for her project titled 'The Forgotten'; - Wylee Longmuir, second in grades 7 - 9 drawing for his work titled 'Looking Back Through Time'; - Samara Foord, second in S2 - S4 painting for her canvass titled 'My Aborted Child's Fourth Birthday'; - Cheyenne Tandy, second in grade 7 - 9 painting for her representation titled 'Colourless'. First place winners were presented with cheques for $100 and second place winners received cheques for $75. Tributes were also paid to the students who were going on to represent the school at the Divisional Frontier Games, held in Cranberry Portage last week. In addition to this, the Zone Champion Girls' Basketball team and Zone Champion Girls Curling team were also introduced and wished luck at their Provincial showdowns. The Girls' Curling team traveled to Gimli late last week. They closed out the Provincials finishing 8th out of the 16 teams Ð with one win and two losses Ð before heading home on Sunday, March 7. The Girls' Basketball team travels to Treherne on March 19 for their shot at Provincials. Still on sports, the Mixed Curling Zones were held in Snow Lake over the weekend at the Gordon M. Rupp Curling Rink. The winning team was Snow Lake's Darcy Tower rink of third Lisa Roy, second Mitchell Romaniuk, and lead Lisa Parthenay. They needed only eight ends to beat out the Cribbs team from Thompson in the final. On a sad note, several Snow Lakers passed away during the month of February. Angeline Patterson, 25, passed away in Winnipeg's Health Sciences Center on February 2. Jerry Hughes, 55, passed away at his home in Snow Lake on February 24, and Ted Deduke, 45, passed away near his home in Thompson, Manitoba during the later days of February. All will be truly missed by family and friends.
