Back in August, the Town of Snow Lake planted a 15-foot White Spruce in an empty lot on the community's Main Street. The idea was to beautify the lot and furnish the lot with a perennial community Christmas tree. Well, that idea has been taken one step further. It will also double as a Halloween tree. On Thursday, October 21, Mrs. Esther Ward's grade 3 class and Mrs. Evelyn Webb's grade 4 class set up a large ladder and decorated the tree with a host of Halloween decorations that the class made. This was a great class project and it has definitely elicited a good number of positive comments from Snow Lake citizens. Speaking of Halloween, Snow Lake will be celebrating the day a tad earlier than most. While it always falls on the last day of the month most places in Canada, in Snow Lake it will fall on the 29th this year. Whenever Halloween falls on a weekend the Town of Snow Lake switches local observance of the day to either a Friday or Monday. The reason being, that the community's school children dress for school parties and this saves the parents the trouble of dressing them up twice. They go right from their school parties to their favorite trick or treat haunts. As many may know, Recreation Director Stephanie Foy has resigned her position and is moving on. The community will certainly miss her. However, what some might not know is that Snow Lake now has a new Recreation Organizer. She is none other than Amanda Perret (nee Guiboche). Amanda started in the position on October 21st. She did get a few hours in with her predecessor, before taking the reins on her own. Amanda is a very personable and out going individual and she will likely put her own mark on the position. However, as with Stephanie before her, she is also approachable and will no doubt be open to suggestions on activities and programs. On to a local policing matter, the Snow Lake RCMP is asking E.T. to phone home. Or at the very least they would appreciate some assistance in finding those persons responsible for the abduction of the four foot high statue nicknamed "Snow Lake's E.T." from the yard at 523 Lakeshore Drive. "Some time in the last week or so, this rather heavy welded chain statue went missing from Mrs. Margaret Setlack's front yard," stated Cst. Kevin Mantie of the local detachment. "Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of E.T. is asked to contact the Snow Lake RCMP," he added. In a bit of sad news, the J.H. Kerr School's Yearbook is in danger of becoming a thing of the past, literally. This past week, it was announced that the committee that produces the book doesn't have enough members, nor do they sell enough copies of the keepsake to keep production on schedule and in the black. Last year's Yearbook Staff Advisor, Cathy Stabback, explained that the committee needs to presell at least 30 yearbooks in order to break even. "In past years these were normally all purchased by grads," said Stabback. "But this year the grad class is small and that is unlikely." She further added that, as it is, the Yearbook Committee subsidizes the price of each yearbook to the tune of $30 though fundraising. With fewer kids on the committee, that fundraising is almost impossible to accomplish. A call has gone out for both members and customers.
