The Zone Championships for Track and Field were held in The Pas this past weekend and the team from Snow Lake did exceptionally well. They won the Zone 11 banner for the third year running and in the process qualified 15 team members for further competition at the Provincial level. The team actually came third in the competition behind much larger schools in Thompson (RD Parker) and Flin Flon (Hapnot). Students who will be going on to the Rural Provincials in Brandon on the weekend of June 4 - 6 are: Jacqueline Borchardt, 3rd in the triple jump; Tori Campbell, 3rd in the 4 X 100m and 3rd in the high jump; Kaytlin Drews, 1st in the hurdles, 2nd in the 100m, and 3rd in the 4 x 100m; Bailey Galiz, 3rd in discus, 3rd in shot put; Allison Klyne, 2nd in high jump; Tyson Klyne, 1st in high jump; Jeanelle Leclair, 1st in the 400m, 1st in the triple jump, 1st in the JV long jump, and 3rd in the 4 X 100m; Ashton Leif, 1st in the 1500m, 1st in the 3000m and 2nd in the hurdles; Chris Nelson, 2nd in the javelin; Chris O'Connor, 2nd in the 4 X 100m; Danielle Pettipas, 1st in the high jump, 1st in the senior long jump and 2nd in the triple jump (Pettipas suffered a torn meniscus in her right knee while competing in the long jump. She still placed 1st despite the fact that she only jumped once; however, she will not be well enough to compete in the Provincials); Lem Randall, 1st in the discus, 2nd in the 100m, and 2nd in the 4 X 100m; Elysia Stoupe, 2nd in javelin, 3rd in the 4 X 100; Leslie Taylor, 1st in the long jump, 2nd in the triple jump, and 2nd in the 4 X 100m; Scott Tychinshi, 2nd in the 4 X 100m. The school also had a Junior team in the competition and although juniors are unable to qualify for the Provincials, they had an excellent showing at the meet. Also, one of the athletes going to the Rural Provincial Championships, Kaytlin Drews, is also on 'track' in another sport and will be one of the 40 Provincial Midget/Bantam girls heading down to Brandon to take part June 25 - 27 in the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence Camp. Of the 40, Kaytlin is one of three Bantam players who were picked to participate in the program. She states that she is very excited about being picked and having the opportunity to play at this level. Players at this camp could go on to play for Team Manitoba in the National Under 18 Championships taking place in February, 2005 in a location yet to be announced. Back to Zone awards, but now one with an academic aspect. Grade 12 student Samara Foord has won the Zone Award for the highest mark in a Grade 12 math contest. In addition to the award, she will receive the top prize, which is a cheque for $100. Samara also placed within the top 100 in the province with her mark. On the mining front, HBMS' Chisel North Mine placed second in the recent Provincial Mine Rescue Competition, held at Lac du Bonnet. First place went to the team from the Underground Research Lab at Pinawa and third went to the New Britannia Mine. New Brit's technician, Lorne Krul won the Technician's Award.
