Well, it's been several years in coming and it's a plan that spent a good deal of time on the drawing board, nevertheless the addition to the Snow Lake Health Centre is beginning to take shape. The addition's rafters, roof and sidewalls are all up and work is moving ahead inside. Mayor Garry Zamzow, who is also a member of the board for the Norman Regional Health Authority, stated at a recent Town Council meeting that the contractor had been working on the wiring and that the entire project was progressing nicely. Moving on to a couple of items that I mentioned in last week's column; the Legion Provincial Curling Playdowns and the Frontier Games. Four days of Legion curling went off without a hitch, and the local branch showed the teams what Northern, and more specifically, Snow Lake hospitality was all about. Legion president, Iona Johnston, stated that when not curling participants were kept busy with various sports, games, and a great tour of the New Britannia mill and underground operation. "We also had to prepare meals all four days, as well as drive courtesy cars, so that kept us hopping," Johnston added. Winners and runners up were, respectively: The District #1 South, Dauphin Br. 20 team of Ray Baker, Bob Alm, Brian Ready, and Greg Thompson. And the District #4, Steinbach Br. 190 team of Wayne Pauls, Rick Fontaine, Russ Kihn, and Al Myers. The winning team from Dauphin will be going on to Saint John, New Brunswick to represent the province in the Legion's Dominion Curling Championships. The Frontier Games also went off without any problems. Students from J.H. Kerr School did well in all competitions, with Danny Roberts (13-14 year-old boys), Kimberly Beilman (13-14 year-old girls), and Jessie Drews (10-12 year-old girls) all garnering 1st place in each of their respective cross-country skiing events. Additionally, both the boys and girls basketball teams received silver medals for their play during the two day Area 4 Games. All first place medalists will go on to compete in the Frontier Divisional Games, which will take place in Cranberry Portage in early March. The weekend of the cordwood bonspiel is one that is looked forward to by children and adults alike. For 50 years now, elementary level school children in Snow Lake have taken part in the spiel, and for about five years, adults have taken to the ice after the little tykes to throw their own wooden rocks. This year's Golden Anniversary Event will be held on March 19th and 20th in the Wilfred T. Lipton Arena. One of the organizers, Mary-ann Otto, tells me that they have several celebratory events lined up to mark the milestone. "We plan to have a display of memorabilia and are looking at a decorated rock contest Ð like they used to do years ago," said Otto. "We are still looking for pictures, so we are hoping people will come forward with them in the next week." Otto added that the group that is sponsoring the Adult Cordwood, J. H. Kerr School's Climate Committee, will be donating commemorative key rings to all of the kids who take part. Good times and great curling will no doubt be enjoyed by all.
