You couldn't have picked a nicer weekend Ð weather-wise Ð to hold Snow Lake's Winter Whoot; however, as far as attendance is concerned one is left to wonder if there is ever a good weekend. Unfortunately, the 2004 Whoot was up against hockey tournaments and playoffs and saw attendance drop as a result of three separate groups of kids being out of town on this weekend. Nevertheless, those who stayed and attended were treated to some excellent events Ð both old and new. One of the signature events of this winter festival is the children's favorite, 'Ice Worm Hunt'. The hunt has organizers hiding a box with the small stuffed toy in it, along with a note stating what the finder has won. This is usually about $100 worth of donated material mainly geared towards kids. The hunt involves a series of riddles released over the span of two days, which eventually take the person who can figure them out to the location of the ice worm. I walked by the beach on Saturday afternoon and the shovels were digging and snow was flying. Later on that afternoon, young Zack Lipton found the worm and claimed the multitude of prizes that went along with it. Also on Saturday afternoon, the Snow Lake SnoDrifters hosted snowmobile radar runs out on the lake. Although not quite the draw that the Drag Races from the previous weekend were, the runs saw a fair number of out-of-town people as well as Snow Lake sledders take part. From all indications, Saturday evening's Legion Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt was very competitive event. Organizers Lynore Spruyt and Lyn MacDougall put several teams through their paces and the squad made up of Randy and Margie Cockle and Michelle and Gail Dupont took home the top prize. Also taking place on Saturday evening was Mateo's Magic Show/Family Hypnotist. The Hall was full and there were lots of laughs. Apparently the hypnotist couldn't put everyone who came forward under, but those he did certainly generated some howls. Human Curling kicked off Sunday. This game is a tad different than regular curling. With Human Curling, you are actually part of the rock (an inner tube that curlers ride into the rings). The Dunbar family rink bested the Roberts family rink in this event. There were a whole host of other events that took place on Sunday; however, a couple that deserve mention were the cakewalk, Snow Lake Idol Talent Contest, and Pudding Pie eating contest. In the cakewalk Lynore and Ron Spruyt's little girls Ð Katie and Kyla Ð hit for nine cakes. Ron almost needed a trolley to get them all out of the hall. The Idol contest was something else. Although first, second, and third went to Celine Leclair, Jade Dawson/Danielle Pettipas, and Rianna Randall respectively, the team of Dawson and Pettipas stole the show. Lip-synching and dancing to the old disco song, 'I will Survive', they had people rolling in the aisles. The Pudding Pie eating event closed out the Whoot. It was a good thing, because with the mess these kids made of themselves, there would have been nothing else to do, but go home and wash up. A great weekend was enjoyed by one and all. Hats off to the organizing committee.
