The 51st Annual Snow Lake Ladies Bonspiel was held last weekend and although not an event that would rival the 50th, it was apparently a pretty good time in its own right. When all the rocks had been thrown and the brooms lay idle, the winners were: In the First Event: Sue Murray rink, Flin Flon; 2nd, Ila Doak Snow Lake; 3rd, Marilan Smigelski, The Pas; 4th, Lois Mosiondz, The Pas. In the Second Event: First went to Liisa Hyytiainen, The Pas; 2nd, Patti Evans, Flin Flon; 3rd, Sharon Beck, Flin Flon; 4th, Wanda Rogers, Flin Flon. In the Third Event: First was Irene Patterson, The Pas; 2nd, Pam Wiwcharuk, Snow Lake; 3rd, Gladys Turnbull, Snow Lake; 4th, Marlene Gingera, Snow Lake. As a matter of note, Snow Lake's Janet Wishart rink scored a seven ender in the spiel. In other news, the population of Snow Lake has increased dramatically this past week with the Legion's Command Regular Curling Championships as well as several events of the Area 4 Frontier Games being held in the community. There are over 200 new people using the town's recreational facilities and roaming local streets. The Legion's Curling Championship got underway on February 10 over at the Gordon R. Rupp Curling Rink. The opening ceremonies were held at 9:30 a.m. followed by the first draw at 10 a.m. Over the period of February 10 to 14, there will be two draws a day, until the final is held on the morning of the 14th. In addition to the curling, there are a number of different activities and meals planned for the group. There will be a tour of New Britannia's surface operation, darts, karaoke, shuffleboard, cards, bingo, and pool on the activity side of things. And for meals, the local host committee has included everything from steak to smokies on any given night. The Area 4 Frontier Games also kicked off February 10, with an opening ceremony at 12:30 p.m. in J.H. Kerr School's Gordon Doak Gymnasium. Following the opening, teams from J.H. Kerr, Frontier Collegiate Institute, Cranberry Portage Elementary, Cold Lake School (Sherridon), Rod Martin School (Moose Lake), Grand Rapids School, and Cormorant Lake School all faced off against each other in badminton, basketball, and cross country skiing. Winners from these area games will go on to the Divisional Frontier Games, which will be held March 2, 3, and 4, in Cranberry Portage. During the two days of the area competitions, teams will sleep and eat in J.H. Kerr School. In order to pull off both the Legion Curling Championships and the Frontier Games, a large number of dedicated volunteers were needed. These people deserve of a tremendous amount of respect for the job that they did ensuring that the two events ran smoothly and were enjoyable for all who took part, as well as for those who observed. On a sad note, Lois Sayies (nee MacDougall) passed away suddenly on February 5. Also, long-time resident of the geriatric ward at the Snow Lake Health Centre, Sara Grey passed away late last week. Both women will be missed immeasurably by their family and friends.
