Although the weather of late has been more suited to cross country skiing than golf, it certainly hasn't kept the duffers or the pros off of the local links. Both the Ladies and Men's Open Tournaments were held in mid-August and although there were various visitors in town taking part, it was the locals who walked away with the major hardware. The Ladies Open took place in the rain on the weekend of August 14-15. The results of this annual event were: Championship Flight 1) Pam Wiwcharuk 2) Molly Gornick 3) Ila Doak. First Flight 1) Lola Leclair 2) Grace Chrapun 3) Thompson's Sheri Horning. Second Flight 1) Wabowden's Pauline Mosiondz 2) Cammie Longmuir 3) Tammy Leaman (Fulmore). Third Flight 1) Flin Flon's Doris Wellman 2) Thompson's Kelly House 3) Gail Eastman. The Men's Open got underway on the weekend of August 21 - 22. The results were: Championship Flight 1) Derek Bartlett 2) Lem Randall 3) Gator Eastman 4) Peter Fris. First Flight 1) Ron Atkinson 2) Brian Doak 3) Alex Green 4) Richard Turnbull. Second Flight 1) Bob Doak 2) Jack Forsyth 3) Don Baker 4) Arnie Drews. Third Flight 1) Bill Mutschel 2) Ron Watt 3) Brian Randall 4) Terry Hornyak. Fourth Flight 1) Dave Smith 2) Rod Bryson 3) Shawn Elliot 4) Henry Frieson. As a matter of note, Lem Randall logged the longest drive on both days of the tournament. The Town of Snow Lake's Recreation Department will hold their annual Leisure Night in the Lawrie Marsh Community Hall from 5 - 8 p.m. on September 16th. This is the evening which community groups use to attract new members by showcasing their organizations. A majority of Snow Lake's sports groups normally come out, take registration, and make members available to answer questions. The Rec. Department will also sponsor a September 17th presentation by the Family Theater Group, titled Welcome on Board. The production's description states that it's, "All anchors away on the seaworthy yacht ? The Dutch Wave". It promises to be a beautiful weekend on the North Sea, but it figuratively and literally falls into the water. Theo van Someren gets to lay down the law on board, but actually things aren't all that rosy. Take for instance those strange phone calls and messages. His wife Barbara demands an explanation. But how do you come up with an alibi and explanation if your memory fails you? The production will be performed in the Lawrie Marsh Hall at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th and tickets are available at Franals, Cornerview, and through the Rec. Dept. Still on the Rec. Department, they have changed the process under which they run their community 'Movie Nights'. In past years, the Town had to buy a license and pay for each movie that was ordered, the majority of which were for an audience of younger children and their parents. They will now be able to bring in two movies at once that will appeal to children, teens, and adults. Beginning in late September, each movie night will be a double feature, with the first movie of the evening proposed for younger audiences and the second movie intended for teens and adults. Upcoming titles include: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and White Chicks on September 25, and Shrek 2 and Raising Helen on October 2. On a closing note, well-known birdwatchers Leone and Ron Langan spotted a Rufous Hummingbird outside of their Berry Bay home. Ron tells me that this is extremely unusual, as these little guys normally stick to habitat along the west coast (nest from Alaska to California, and winter in Mexico).
