The road to Snow Lake just got a little brighter with the installation of two new lights on a standard at the junction of PH #39 and PTH #392. Manitoba Hydro placed the temporary lights two weeks ago, and a more permanent installation will take place later in the year. It has been the community's position for quite some time that, like others throughout the province, this junction should be lit at night. It is not only safer, but gives the impression that there is something equally as bright (as the lights) at the end of this winding road. Several years back, there was a light by the turnoff above a phone at the junction's rest stop. The phone was removed due to vandalism and once it was gone, it wasn't felt there was further reason to provide the light, so it too was removed. Town council has been asking for a new light ever since. They recently got MLA Gerard Jennissen involved, and he was able to do some successful lobbying. Moving on to school news, several weeks back J.H. Kerr School hosted a portion of the Frontier Games. The activities, which included, basketball, badminton, skiing and snowshoeing, played out over several very busy days. In the end, the Cranberry Portage Elementary boys' and girls' teams took first place in basketball, while the Cormorant Lake girls' and boys' teams took second. In badminton, Snow Lake's winning contingent included Anthony Dupont and Kim Beilman, who garnered first in mixed doubles. Boe Oleksuk and Brady Wiwcharuk were also first in boys' doubles play, while Nasya Hughes and Jenny Oleksuk were ranked third in girls' doubles. In singles play, Nick Norlock placed second in the boys', with Jessie Drews placing fourth on the girls' side. In snowshoeing, sisters Courtney and Caitlin Wagner placed first in girl's doubles. And in skiing, it was Boe Oleksuk and Danny Roberts who took first and second respectively on the boys' side, and Kimberly Beilman skied to a first place finish on the girls' side. Science Fair Still with the school, the annual Science Fair took place on February 23. Winners were: Grade 4/5 1st - Hannah Ward and Melanie Gregor-Payne for "Which Orange Juice Contains the Most Vitamin C?" 2nd - Devon Teneycke and Nick Gray for "We Can See U" 3rd - Sara Otto and Alexa Dayson for "Does Hot or Cold Water Freeze Faster?" Grades 6-8 1st - April Webb and Toni Butt for "Not Any Wet Noodle Will Do" 2nd - Hillary Gaudreault and Amanda Fudge for "Nutty Energy" 3rd - Greg Wiwcharuk for "Slap Shot" Grades 9-12 1st - Carol-Lynn Beilman and Jeanine Dupont for "Water" 2nd - Denis Hart and Grant Walker for "Who's Balls Are Best?" 3rd - Megan Ward and Alex Menzies for "Producing Gas" Now an update on two young gentlemen whom I've mentioned on numerous occasions in this column. Having just been chosen for the Manitoba Provincial Biathlon Team next month, Boe Oleksuk will be competing in Alberta against over 150 other Western Canadian Biathletes in what will be the equivalent of the Western Canadian Championships. Also, Grant Walker went undefeated in last weekend's Provincial Wrestling Championships, winning the gold in the 115 kg category. In doing so, he beat last year's champion and a former Judo Champ to take the medal. Grant was the only Gold medallist from the North. Staff and students at Joseph H. Kerr School, as well as residents, are unbelievably proud of these two young men and what they have accomplished. Hats off also to Boe and Grant's coach, Mr. Steve Deighton.
