The Trout Festivalâ??s Battle of the Bands returns this weekend, earlier than usual and at a new location. The musical competition, which often attracts youth garage bands, will be held this Saturday, June 8, beginning at 4 p.m. Rather than Main Street, as in years past, the Battle will be fought at the Flin Flon Skatepark next to Many Faces Education Centre. The Reminder caught up with chairperson Alex McGilvery to discuss the event. Q: What is the thinking behind holding the event at the skateboard park? McGilvery: There is a skateboard competition being held that day. (Trout Festival president) Tim Babcock and I talked about the possibility and decided that many of the people who will go to the competition would also go the Battle of the Bands. We thought the music would be a good closer for the competition. Q: What age ranges can enter? McGilvery: Any one can enter. Each band needs at least three people, including a drummer. Q: What time does it start? Is everyone invited? Is there a cover charge? McGilvery: Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the music. We will be starting at 4 p.m. after the skateboarders finish. Thereâ??s no cover charge. Q: What is the value of an event like this to the community? McGilvery: I think any event that encourages musicians is great. We have lots of coffee houses for acoustic musicians, but it is a little harder to set up for a full electric band. This event gives those people a chance to shine. Q: How can someone register, is there a fee and what is the registration deadline? McGilvery: There is no fee to sign up. To register people need to call me at 204-271-2066 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Iâ??d like to have the list finalized by (tomorrow) night so we can schedule the bands and arranged for judging, etc.
