Denare Beach and area residents gathered at the Northern Gateway Museum last weekend to remember a former RCMP officer.
The museum’s annual Discovery Day focused on the work and support of Marcel (Chappy) Chappuis, who established a one-man RCMP detachment in Sturgeon Landing in the late 1920s.
Originally from Switzerland, Chappy migrated to Canada in 1911. In 1917 he worked with the Saskatchewan Provincial Police until it disband in 1928. He then developed the one-man RCMP detachment in Sturgeon Landing.
The museum promoted its new feature on Chappy as two large boards greeted gusts as they walked inside the log building.
Charts and information allowed guests to follow Chappy’s timeline as well as read about his time in the Denare Beach area.
Hands on learning
The museum’s Discovery Day was more than just a history lesson about Chappy. It welcomed area residents as well as guests to tour the museum as well as spend the beautiful afternoon outside.
There were hot dogs and refreshments as well as a hands-on table.
Children took the opportunity to learn through touch as they discovered artifacts.
Celebrating 49 years
Stan and Florence Curtis were acknowledged for their 49 years as cottage residents in Denare Beach.
The couple has been enjoying cottage life in the area since 1965.
