Murder trial begins for Flin Flon man accused in 2012 stabbing

Trial proceedings were scheduled to begin Tuesday in the case of a Flin Flon man accused of murder in a 2012 stabbing death.

Trial proceedings were scheduled to begin Tuesday in the case of a Flin Flon man accused of murder in a 2012 stabbing death.

Mitchell Whitbread, 27, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of fellow Flin Flon resident John (Kelli) Eyres.

The court office in The Pas, where the trial is taking place, reports jury selection took place Monday with the trial to begin the following day.

Justice officials have set aside this week and next week for the trial.

Whitbread’s case was set for trial after a 2014 preliminary inquiry, held at provincial court in Flin Flon, determined there was sufficient evidence for the trial to proceed.

A publication ban prevented the media from disclosing details of the evidence.

The RCMP have released few details of Eyres’ May 12, 2012 death other than to say he died from a stabbing and that he and Whitbread were not known to each other.

Whitbread’s attorney previously told The Reminder that the charge against his client would be “vigorously defended.”
