About 60 delegates attended the annual CUPE Municipal Workers Conference last week at Rocky View Lodge. Delegates represent members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees who work for municipal governments across Manitoba. According to Glenn Sorensen, Vice-President of Local 228 in Flin Flon, "the meeting is a place for us to talk over what's happening in municipal workplaces around Manitoba and work on how we can meet the needs of members and serve the public better." Sorenson, who is an equipment operator for the municipality, also pointed out that on the agenda for the conference were issues dealing with pension plans, the dangers of privatizing public services and how the union can improve its services to members. The four day conference was addressed by the mayors of Flin Flon and Denare Beach, Dennis Ballard and Carl Lentowicz. The mayors welcomed the delegates to the area and pointed out some of the local highlights for delegates to enjoy. Gary Andrew, chair of the Municipal Steering Committee, also said the conference was very successful. Not only did delegates get a lot done, they fully enjoyed the setting and hospitality of Denare Beach, he said. The Canadian Union of Public Employees is Canada's largest union representing more than a half-million women and men. In Manitoba, CUPE represents 24,000 members working in health care facilities, school divisions, social services, child care centres and family emergency services. CUPE represents workers in public utilities, libraries, police service call centres and many other municipal services provided across Manitoba.
