An Alberta MP has tabled a Private Member's Bill calling for the establishment of a National Hockey Day. Linda Duncan (Edmonton-Strathcona) says Canadians of all ages love their 'national winter sport.' 'In community rinks across the country, families and neighbours come together to play hockey or cheer on their local team,' said Duncan, a New Democrat. 'My goal of celebrating National Hockey Day is to help encourage the participation of boys and girls in the sport that is loved by so many.' The bill recognizes that hockey is a sport enjoyed by all ages, genders, abilities and cultural backgrounds. It acknowledges the role of community associations in fostering the sport, and hockey's ability to forge a bond between communities. It would establish the third Friday in February as National Hockey Day. It would not be a statutory holiday. 'Any opportunity to interest young people in sport and shine a spotlight on the amazing bonds sport builds in our communities is a great thing,' said Official Opposition Sport critic Matthew Dub_.
