The large pile of snow near Wallace Avenue and Bracken Street, or “Mount Slushmore” or “Snow Mountain” as it has been nicknamed, is unlikely to return this year, the City of Flin Flon recently told The Reminder.

According to municipal administrator Glenna Daschuk, the height and width of snow piles is determined by the quantity of snow fall.

The creation of “Snow Mountain”, Daschuk said, was due to the largest snowfall the area had received in decades. This year, there’s “a lot less snow” than last year, she said.

The city wants to avoid a single big pile this winter, and is looking into distributing snow piles in different areas.

Questions about the dirt and grit affecting Ross Creek circulated last winter, but Daschuk said government officials determined the big pile didn’t leak into the creek.

Director of public works Charles Boulet told The Reminder earlier this year most of the grit that remains after the snow melts stays on the ground and crews can clean it up.

An explanation for the big pile last winter, Daschuk said, was “there was just nowhere to put it.”
