The Manitoba government has opened up its wallet to provide the Flin Flon-Creighton Public Library with an annual funding increase of nearly $8,000. "It's good news for the library for helping with the services that are provided to the community," said administrator Phyliss Stadnick. Announced yesterday, the funding is part of a $40,000 increase to eight libraries across Northern Manitoba. It marks the first provincial increase to the libraries in a decade and is part of the province's Northern Development Strategy. "By increasing support to rural and northern libraries, we are giving those families the support they need to help them live and work in their home community," said Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Eric Robinson in a statement. "In this information age, all Manitobans need equal access to information to improve their education, graduate to better jobs and improve their quality of life." Also sharing in the new funding are the libraries in Snow Lake ($1,500); The Pas ($7,295); Thompson ($14,756); Leaf Rapids ($2,809); Lynn Lake ($1,856); Churchill ($2,463); and Gillam ($1,678. Manitoba's public libraries serve more than 920,000 residents each year with collections that contain more than four million items.
