In an effort to keep up with demand, the Manitoba government will soon make a total of 23 new cottage lots available at Big Island, Sourdough Bay, and the Millwater subdivision. Starting this spring, a public draw will take place for 11 available lots at Big Island, five at Sourdough Bay, and seven at Millwater. "I've heard that there's a big demand for these cottage lots," said Mayor Dennis Ballard. "I've heard people say, 'If this government wants to do something for me, get me a cottage lot.'" The mayor said the demand for cottage lots is also an issue that Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennissen has often heard. The 23 lots are 1,500 sq. ft. or greater and nearly all are priced at $5,000. The lots were among 700 new lots announced by the province yesterday. The government is in the process of identifying an additional 300 lots across the province that will be made available through a draw in 2005. "We are pleased to be following through on our promise to create more opportunities for Manitobans to enjoy our spectacular natural areas," said Conservation Minister Stan Struthers in a news release. "This initiative will increase opportunities for Manitobans and their families and contribute positively to our tourism industry." All of the lots will be made available to the public through a cottage lot draw, with applicants required to submit a $100 deposit. Details of the lots and the upcoming draws are available online at: www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/cottaging Information and application forms may also be obtained by calling 1-800-282-8069, extension 5144. Other available lots in Northern Manitoba include: Two lots for sale in Cranberry Portage for $10,000 each. Eleven lots for sale at Clearwater Lake for $17,500 each. Twelve lots for sale at Wekusko Lake outside Snow Lake for $3,200 each. Seven lots for lease at Liz Lake south of Thompson for between $1,163 and $6,500.5/14/2004
