Statistics Canada supplies the following figures on motherhood in Canada: 9.2 million: The total number of mothers in Canada (including biological, adoptive and stepmothers) in 2006. 3.9 million: The number of mothers in Canada with children under 18 living with them (including biological, adoptive and stepmothers) in 2006. 89 per cent: The proportion of two-parent families in Canada where it was the woman who stayed home in 2010 (433,000 families). About 50,400: The number of children aged 7 or younger who lived with their biological mother and their stepfather in 2008-2009. About 5,000: The number of children aged 7 or younger who lived with their biological father and their stepmother in 2008-2009. 209 minutes: The amount of time that women spent per day with their family in 2005. 248 minutes: The amount of time that women spent per day with their family in 1986. 72.9 per cent: The employment rate of women with children under 16 living at home in 2009, nearly twice the rate of 39.1 per cent recorded in 1976. 64.4 per cent: The employment rate for women with children under 3 in 2009, more than double the proportion of 27.6 per cent in 1976. 85 per cent: The proportion of all new mothers in 2008 (327,000) who were employed before giving birth. Of this group, 80 per cent reported receiving paid maternity and/or parental leave benefits. 377,886: The total number of births registered in Canada in 2008. This was up 2.7 per cent from 2007 and the sixth consecutive annual increase. 11,816: The number of multiple births (including twins, triplets or more) in 2008. 193,755: The number of boys born in Canada in 2008. 184,131: The number of girls born in Canada in 2008. 228,541: The number of live births for married mothers in 2008. 29.3 years: The average age of women giving birth in Canada in 2008. 1,132,290: The number of lone-parent families headed by women in 2006. About 339,400: The number of children aged 7 or younger who only lived with their biological mother in 2008-2009. $60,000: The median value of assets for lone-parent mothers in 2009, compared with $200,000 for lone-parent fathers. 118,775: The total number of live births among women aged 30 to 34 in Canada in 2008. 57,316: The total number of live births among women aged 35 to 39 in Canada in 2008. 8.9 per cent: The proportion of women aged 40 to 44 who had a child under 5 in 2006, or about 117,100 women. 4.3 per cent: The proportion of women aged 40 to 44 who had a child under 5 in 1986. 14 per cent: The proportion of women aged 40 to 44 who had a bachelor's degree who were mothers of a young child in 2006. 23 per cent: The proportion of women aged 40 to 44 who had a bachelor's degree in 2006. 11 per cent: The proportion of women aged 40 to 44 who had a bachelor's degree in 1986. 10,705: The total number of live births for mothers aged 40 to 44 in Canada in 2008. For 25 per cent of these mothers, this was their first live birth. 30,534: The number of pregnancies among females aged 15 to 19 in Canada in 2005, down from 44,576 in 1996. $133 million: The value of cut flowers (including tulips, daffodils, roses, and so on) produced by Canadian greenhouses in 2010. 310 million: The number of cut flowers produced by Canadian greenhouses in 2010. 59 per cent: The participation rate of men in housework (meal preparation, meal clean-up, indoor cleaning and laundry) in 2005. 40 per cent: The participation rate of men in housework (meal preparation, meal clean-up, indoor cleaning, and laundry) in 1986.
