The Manitoba government has hired an independent commissioner to review the wages and benefits of members of the legislative assembly. Earl Backman, one-time CEO of the Brandon Regional Health Authority, will report back to the legislature on the matter in April. He will compare the salaries paid to Manitoba MLAs to those of other provinces as part of his review. Manitoba MLAs currently make $65,500 per year and also receive travel allowances, money for constituency offices and a housing allowance if their constituency is at least 50 kilometres from the legislature in Winnipeg. An independent commission recommended to the province in 1995 that MLA salaries and benefits be reviewed after every election.
