Creighton and Denare Beach MLA Joan Beatty is the subject of a new in-depth profile on the CBC Web site. Reporter Merelda Fiddler offers an intriguing look at the journalist-turned-politician who secured more than two-thirds of the vote in her constituency in November. Beatty was later named the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Recreation as well as provincial secretary. "One of my priorities is to refocus what northern affairs is doing," Beatty said in the CBC piece, "to service northerners and Aboriginal people. I know what I'll be doing at the table. I know I'm not going to shut up and that's why I've been asked to sit at the cabinet table. A voice for the northerners and Aboriginal people." The article details Beatty's upbringing, her time as a television journalist with CBC in the '80s and '90s, and her foray into politics. For residents who haven't met the amiable politician, the piece also offers a sense of what kind of person she is. "I think we're all role models. In fact, I know we are," she told CBC. "It's always been part of who I am. You can be a negative role model, a positive one, or a horrible warningÉ But my goal is still to try and improve the situation of our people. If we succeed as aboriginal people, if we're successful, the province is going to benefit, the country will benefit. It's an honour to be a role model, but my focus remains the same."
