Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada officially kicked off its Chocolatey Mint Cookie Week with a "Pink Tea Party" and a Famous Five re-enactment at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. It was exactly 75 years ago yesterday, in 1929, that women in Canada were legally recognized as "persons". Five women, known as the Famous Five, were instrumental in the Persons Case and were celebrated by Girl Guides at the party. "It was an honour to host this event. Girl Guides is a great organization and one that gives endless opportunities for girls and women to be leaders and contribute to Canadian society," said Grete Hale, Board Chair of Morrison Lamothe Inc., and emcee for the Mint Monday Kickoff Party. "By kicking of Mint Week on the 75th Anniversary of the Persons Cases, Girl Guides is reaffirming its support of the Famous Five and women and girls across the country." Chocolatey Mint Week is a weeklong Canada-wide coordinated cookie selling effort from October 18-24, 2004. Proceeds from the cookie sales provide the essential funds to sustain and create Guiding activities for over 147,000 girls and women. Available for $4 a box, the cookies will be sold until the end of December or while supplies last. "Girl Guides across the country will be in neighbourhoods this week selling cookies to raise funds for programs and activities. It's mint mania by the mouthful!" said Chris Sutton, volunteer President of the Management Board of Girl Guides.
