Manitoba education minister Peter Bjornson will hear firsthand the concerns facing the Flin Flon School Division when he visits the community next week. Bjornson is scheduled to be in Flin Flon on Monday for a tour of the schools and a closed-door meeting with the Flin Flon School Board. "It's not every day we get the minister of education in Flin Flon," commented Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch at Tuesday's board meeting. Veitch said he has compiled a list of discussion topics for the visit and encouraged the trustees to inform him of any ideas they have. Potential topics include the province's mandatory ward voting system for school board elections, which the trustees strongly oppose, and the challenges that arise from declining enrollments. Bjornson will be be in Thompson the day after his Flin Flon visit to participate in an consultation session, which Veitch and the trustees have been invited to attend. In another matter, Veitch announced that the school division will host a community meeting in November to further discuss ways to deal with the dwindling student population. The meeting, slated for Nov. 3 at the Hapnot Collegiate gymnasium, will include information on the potential remedies suggested by the public at a forum last spring. The superintendent encouraged staff, students and the community at large to attend. Also, Veitch noted that Flin Flon will host the 2004 Manitoba Physical Education Supervisors Conference next week. Discussion topics will include assessment and reporting, and programming at the middle years and high school levels. The next school board meeting is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Flin Flon School Division offices beginning at 7:30 p.m.
