When businesspeople from across the province gather in Flin Flon this spring, they'll get a taste of the industry that has kept the community going for over seven decades. Organizers plan to use a mining theme when welcoming delegates to the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce Annual General Meeting in the community this April. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, host of the event, is considering different ways to incorporate mining into an ice-breaker gathering at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. At yesterday's chamber meeting at the Friendship Centre Restaurant, members discussed a possible "gold panning" activity station that would allow people to learn about the basic gold prospecting method. There was also talk of letting people try their luck at excavation using a miniature mining headframe, and of giving all the delegates a hard hat as a souvenir. A suggestion was made that organizers somehow replicate the sounds and smells of a mine so people entering the auditorium feel like they are going underground. Though not related to mining, another idea was to embody fishing Ð another activity for which Flin Flon is known Ð with a virtual angling display. A committee will take such ideas into account as it organizes the gathering, which is expected to be attended by dozens of delegates. "There's lots of things we can do," commented Doug O'Brien, chamber president. See 'Preparations' P.# Con't from P.# O'Brien reported that the necessary preparations for the annual meeting are well underway, with hotel rooms and Flin Flon Community Hall facilities booked. He mentioned that the Flin Flon Ministerial Association will be approached about providing someone to say grace at the meals during the event. Some expect in the neighbourhood of 200 delegates from across the province will attend the meeting, which will allow delegates to vote on issues related to lobbying efforts and learn about business-related topics. O'Brien believes the meeting will be an ideal way to help the local chamber celebrate Ñ albeit belatedly Ñ its 75th anniversary. A business group called The Board of Trade was formed in Flin Flon in 1929 and renamed the Chamber of Commerce in 1948.1/26/2005
