Flin Flon miners are still allowed to smoke underground, but they can't light up in lunch rooms and must be at least 50 meters away from their work area. The Manitoba government last week incorporated this regulation into the smoking ban for indoor public places and work sites, which takes effect today. "There was some recognition of the unique nature of mining in terms of underground mining," said Peter Dalla-Vicenza, spokesman for Minister of Healthy Living Jim Rondeau. The rule applies to all underground mines in Manitoba. Smoking is still permitted in open pit mines, as they are not considered an enclosed work area. The distance of 50 meters is equal to 164 feet.1/10/04
