The Manitoba government and the City of Brandon will be seeking suggestions from the public in determining the future of the Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) site, Transportation and Government Services Ron Lemieux has announced. Made up of representatives from both governments, a joint committee has been formed to explore options for the valuable property which includes four buildings on 160 acres on the BMHC site and more than 500 acres of adjacent undeveloped Crown land. The committee will report to Lemieux and Brandon Mayor David Burgess. Lemieux said key components of the process will be to gather input from the community, to work on housing and commercial development on the BMHC site, and to establish community economic development projects on adjacent lands. He added work would be conducted to preserve heritage buildings and the history of the area. "Our governments have committed to working together and I look forward to proceeding with our partners to explore the exciting opportunities this property has to offer." "This site presents great potential for many uses and exciting commercial development opportunities that hold enormous potential for the economic future of Brandon," said Industry, Economic Development and Mines Minister Scott Smith. "The city is experiencing historic growth and this allows another opportunity to continue that progress." "These are exciting times for Brandon and we look forward to rolling up our sleeves and working with the province on this exciting new initiative," Burgess said.
