Emergency workers repelled down a steep rock ridge along Sipple Hill early Monday to rescue a man who had fallen precariously on a protruding ledge. He and two other young men had been walking high up on the rocks west of the hill when all three individuals lost their footing on a rounded cliff, authorities said. The two other men suffered injuries after tumbling some 50 feet to the ground. One of them was found lying close to a shallow rock crevasse. The man who landed on the ledge about 35 feet off the ground was injured and unable to get to safety, prompting a call to the HBMS Fire Dept., which features a rope rescue team, for assistance. Two HBMS rescuers, Rob Larocque and Dave Craig, repelled down the ridge, carefully moved the man into basket stretcher, and lowered him to waiting ambulance attendants. Prior to the rescue, Cpt. Brian Mackie of the Flin Flon Fire Dept., who had also been called to the scene, assisted attendants in transporting the two other victims into a waiting ambulance. All three men were taken to hospital by 8 a.m. Details surrounding their current condition were not released. "The response and rescue went very well with all personnel and associated emergency agencies working together," wrote Brad Davidson of the HBMS Fire Dept. in his report on the incident. "Having the HBMS Rope Rescue Trailer for the rope rescue personnel was certainly a critical asset for the timely rescue of the injured victim on the ledge." The Flin Flon and HBMS fire departments follow a mutual aid agreement whereby one department assists the other when a situation necessitates certain equipment, expertise, or both.
