The Flin Flon Indian-Metis Friendship Association reviewed another busy year Wednesday evening. About 25 people gathered at the Friendship Centre for the association's 38th annual general meeting, which reviewed the fiscal year ending March 31. Executive director Shelly Craig wrote in her report that the organization's programs have been diversifying and growing. One of the orders of business was to elect the 2004-05 executive, which consists of: President - Sheena Reed Vice-President - Joan Ledoux Secretary-Treasurer - Iris Lycan Directors - Colleen Arnold, Marcie Johnson, Floyd Lafournaise, Don McKenzie, Jeanine Novak, and Keith Reed. Novak and Keith Reed were the only newcomers. The annual report outlined various community initiatives with which the association was involved, including: The Community Diabetes Resource Worker position was created in September 2003, providing a "grassroots approach" to diabetes prevention and education services. The Second Annual Artist's Retreat, coordinated in conjunction with the Flin Flon Arts Council, took place in September 2003. The First Annual Bust the Winter Blues Festival took place in February 2004, merging the Friendship Centre's Sled Dog Races/Winter Festival with the Creighton Chilly Willy Winter Festival. The Friendship Centre played an instrumental role in hosting the Tom Jackson concert in October. The Friendship Centre again awarded two $500 bursaries to a graduate of Hapnot Collegiate (Janell Melenchuk) and Many Faces Education Centre (Courtney Cook). A introductory course to Cree was offered, and the demand was high. Sunlight Playday, a community event designed to bring families, organizations, and businesses together, took place at Phantom Lake in the summer of 2003.
