Two Flin Flonners arrested last summer on hate speech-related charges are taking a different path on the recommendation of indigenous elders.
The two took part in a mediation circle at Opaskwayak Cree Nation on the recommendation of community elders and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, a political advocacy group representing more than 20 northern Manitoba First Nations.
Through the circle, the accused read their comments to a group of elders, officials, mothers and other members of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation last week and heard remarks from community members.
Both were arrested following an online tirade last July after an act of vandalism, posting threats and calls for racially based violence including hopes for a “shoot a (sic) Indian day” and calling for a “24-hour purge.”
The pair each face charges of public incitement of hatred and suspicion of uttering threats. A third person arrested in the incident, a Saskatchewan resident, is proceeding through the criminal justice system separately.
According to reports from event attendees, the two Flin Flonners showed remorse for their previous statements and apologized.
The mediation circle will include two sessions. The first was on Jan. 16, with the second set for Feb. 13.
