Submitted by Grade 5 Jedele Thirty-nine students from Ecole McIsaac School graduated from the DARE program on June 6. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It teaches students how to say 'no', in different ways, to drugs, alcohol and violence. Here are some facts that the students learned: Tobacco can dry out your skin and cause wrinkles. More than 45,000 people die each year from drug-related disease. Alcohol goes directly into your bloodstream and can increase your risk for a variety of diseases. Marijuana contains more than 400 chemicals, including some cancer-causing substances. Chewing tobacco can give you mouth cancer. We also learned how to say no in a confident manner. At the end of the program, we all wrote a pledge stating how we can stay drug-free and committing to make wise decisions about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Cst. Jordan Tost taught us in a fun but educational way. We had a graduation ceremony and recommend that all Grade 5 students take DARE in the future.
