Energy, Science and Technology Minister Tim Sale and Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk have congratulated Husky Energy for participating in the federal government's Ethanol Expansion Program that will support the expansion of its ethanol production facility in Manitoba. "Our government has been working with local communities and the industry to promote ethanol expansion for some time and this announcement is an important first step by the federal government to support this process," said Sale. "We look forward to moving ahead, securing additional investment and growing our ethanol industry." "Many communities have expressed their interest in pursuing ethanol as a viable option to spur economic development and rural diversification," said Wowchuk. "Our next step is to build the facilities and take advantage of the expanding ethanol market to provide economic opportunities for rural communities." Manitoba passed the Biofuels Act in December 2003 that establishes a mandate requiring that up to 85 per cent of all gasoline sold in Manitoba contain 10 per cent ethanol by September 2005.
