With the next municipal election less than a year away, Mayor George Fontaine isn’t ready to say whether his name will be on the ballot.
Asked last week whether he will seek re-election, all he would say is that six months prior to the vote, he will inform the media of his decision.
“I’ve had the discussion with my wife and I said the first person who’s going to know will be her,” added Fontaine, addressing the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce.
Ascended
Then a one-term city councillor, Fontaine ascended to the mayoralty in a landslide in October 2010. He had the support of seven in ten voters.
Since then he has shaken up civic politics with bold moves and proposals he says are necessary for fairness and the financial viability of the municipality.
Fontaine has been respectful but vocal in arguing that fire service for cottagers must come with a price tag, Flin Flon recreation costs should be shared regionally, and low-end home owners need to pay higher taxes.
He has earned detractors and supporters along the way, but his re-election chances are difficult to gauge.
No one has publicly announced they will run for mayor, but there is still lots of time. The next election will be in October 2014.
