Jonathon Naylor Editor Mayor George Fontaine is welcoming Helga Bryant's appointment as CEO of the new Northern Regional Health Authority. At last week's city council meeting, the mayor made a point of congratulating Bryant, former head of the now-defunct NOR-MAN RHA, on her promotion. 'I think she's going to be doing a lot of hard work to make this region work better' Mayor Fontaine said. 'I've had conversations with her and I'm convinced that she's going to make some changes.' He said Bryant has received 'a lot of bad press lately,' but critics should 'give her a chance to do what she's supposed to do' before commenting. Bryant will head the new RHA that will cover Flin Flon and virtually all of northern Manitoba. It is a combination of the now-defunct NOR-MAN RHA, which was based in Flin Flon, and the Burntwood RHA, which was based in Thompson. At a recent public forum, Bryant outlined progress within NOR-MAN to satisfy 44 recommendations made by an independent review panel last year. She said NOR-MAN had fully integrated 28 of the recommendations. Of the remaining 16, half were 'very well underway,' three necessitated partnering with other organizations and five were in the early stages of implementation. Bryant described the new NRHA Medical Clinic as a success, with patient visits up 300 per cent over the last year, and said three to four new doctors were expected to join NOR-MAN in the coming months.
