2003 May 1 Ð Recycling in Flin Flon has taken a big step forward with the implementation of the city wide curbside pickup program. On Monday, the Flin Flon Recycling Centre introduced the service, which will coincide with he garbage day schedule. May 5 Ð Debbie Murphy is fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse, now that she doesn't have to move out of the Creighton area to take the necessary training. Murphy is one of the 27 students enrolled in the one-time LPN training course that has been set up in the administration wing ot the Ruth Betts. "I wouldn't have taken this course if it hadn't been based in Flin Flon," she said. May 6 Ð One of Flin Flon's most historic buildings is slated for demolition. The Flin Flon School Division has put out a tender for the tearing down and removal of the Neil A. McLennan Building, formerly Ross Lake School, on Adams Street. May 8 Ð As HBMS continues to work to prevent its tailings pond dust from blowing into nearby Creighton, the Company is also helping to clean up the community from a sever dusting incident late last year. The Company has hired a crew to hose and clean up public areas affected by the dusting of December 6. Ð When Flin Flonners think of animal advocacy, one name comes to mind Ð Debbie Hiebert. So it didn't come as much of a surprise Tuesday when the president of the local SPCA received the Animal Action Award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. "Animals are a good test of our character,"said Hiebert upon receiving the award from Mayor Dennis Ballard during the City Council meeting. May 13 Ð A shortage of copper concentrate from other mines has prompted HBMS to schedule a one-month vacation shutdown of its smelter. Set for the last week of June and the first three weeks of July, the shutdown will affect 215 employees. May 21 Ð It wasn't what Flin Flon RCMP were hoping for, as they fined 67 people for seatbelt infractions last week during a check-stop program. "The numbers were greater than what we wanted to see," commented Cpl. Mike Zens. Violators received $100 fines. May 26 Ð It was only fitting that this year's installment of the Northern Juried Art Show took place in Flin Flon. Local residents took first place in six of the seven categories at the 27th edition of the annual show, held over the weekend at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. "Everybody said it was a really, really good show," noted Co-chair Gerry Clark. May 27 Ð Hundreds of people have been flocking to the Joe Brain Children's Pett zoo, eager to visit with some friendly four-legged company. "It's been incredible," commented supervisor Bar Elliot. "We've had so many people here."
