2003 March 3 Ð The Flin Flon Evergreen Rebekah Lodge #56 celebrated a milestone over the weekend. The women's organization commemorated its 50th anniversary with a Golden Anniversary Tea, held at the Northminster Memorial United Church and attended by about 200 patrons. March 4 Ð The annual Chilly Willy Festival was held last weekend in cold temperatures, -45 to -55 degrees Celsius. However, good numbers of people still supported the many events Ð some of them held outside in the 'Chilly' weather. March 5 Ð The Flin Flon Community Choir sang to a packed hall at the Lutheran Church on Sunday night, as they gave the audience a taste of what they would be performing this month in Saskatoon with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. March 6 Ð More preliminary work took place at the Flintoba Shopping Centre site yesterday morning, another sign that announcements from additional retailers may not be far off. March 13 Ð Faced with mounting losses and increased competition, the general merchandise department of the Co-op will close by May 10. "In the past years, the board considered the general merchandise department as a service to the membership but now with the current retail condition in Flin Flon, that service is no longer needed, read a Co-op press release. March 14 Ð High-paying jobs in the mining industry helped Flin Flonners to earn, on average, just over $9,000 more than other Manitobans in 2001, Statistics Canada reports. Statistics show that Flin Flon residents working full-time earned an average $45,669 which the average Manitoban earned $36,549. March 17 Ð Saturday night, March 15, was the Legion Ladies Auxiliary's turn to be catered to, as they celebrated 70 years of hard work and great fellowship. Presently there are 130 women in the group, with 15 life members. March 21 Ð The City of Flin Flon and the Town of Creighton jointly issued a media release yesterday concerning a study regarding the building of a multiplex facility in the local region. The proposed location for the multiplex would be near the No. 6 tee box at the Phantom Lake Golf Course. The facility would contain both a curling rink and a swimming pool. March 26 Ð In another positive economic sign for the community, Northand Ford out of The Pas is in talks to open a new dealership in Flin Flon. Yesterday, contractors began removing the two gas pumps and accompanying light stand from Bernie's Sales and Service, as Northland intends to purchase the building. March 28 Ð A new technology drop-in centre, for use by the general public, officially opened in Crieghton Wednesday. The Technology Enhance Learning Centre (TEL) is at Northlands College and offers 14 computers, all of them online.
