Manslaughter verdict in 2012 homicide

Jurors reject second-degree murder charge

A Flin Flon man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the 2012 homicide of a fellow resident.

Mitchell Whitbread, 27, had pleaded not guilty to the more serious charge of second-degree murder in the death of John (Kelli) Eyres.

Jurors began deliberating Monday afternoon and returned with the manslaughter verdict on Tuesday afternoon.

The judge had instructed jurors they could consider a manslaughter conviction.

Whitbread was released on bail until his sentencing, which will take place on March 7, 2016 in the Court of Queen's Bench in The Pas, where the trial was held.

Manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. It differs from second-degree murder in that it denotes a homicide committed without the intent of causing death.

The RCMP released few details of Eyres’ May 12, 2012 death in Flin Flon other than to say he died from a stabbing and that he and Whitbread were not known to each other.
