In anticipation of a potential postal strike, the Manitoba government has arranged for government cheques and other essential mail to be available for pickup as of Monday, June 20.
Manitobans may call 1-866-626-4862 (toll-free) or visit www.manitoba.ca with questions about the potential postal disruption and which pickup locations are closest to them.
The province encourages Manitobans to contact the department issuing the cheque to ensure the cheque is ready.
The province mails about 50,000 cheques every month. If a postal strike or lockout does not take place, regular government mail will resume as quickly as possible, the province said.
Manitobans who currently receive payments or benefits by direct deposit will not be affected by a postal stoppage.
Canada’s postal workers will have the ability to strike as early as July 2. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has said it expects workers to be locked out.
As of Tuesday morning, Canada Post and its employees appeared to be far apart on a new contract.
