Manitoba gets failing grade on education, says critic

The opposition Progressive Conservatives are taking aim at Manitoba’s NDP government over falling test scores.

From 2000 to 2012, the most recent year for which statistics are available, reading scores for 15-year-old students in Manitoba dropped steadily, said education critic Wayne Ewasko.

That’s despite the fact that during that same 12-year period, provincial spending on education more than doubled from $1.7 billion to $3.5 billion, he said.

Manitoba’s students are last in Canada in key areas and have fallen further behind in international rankings in literacy, math and science, Ewasko said.

However, when questioned by the Winnipeg Sun, Ewasko would not commit to specifics on what a Tory government would do to improve educational outcomes.
