Manitoba’s Rent Assist program will now pay up to 75 per cent of median market rent for EIA recipients and low-income earners.
The increase to Rent Assist took effect Tuesday. The program assists Manitobans who spend more than 25 per cent of their income on rent for a modest apartment in the private market.
The benefit is designed to provide housing stability, Minister of Jobs and Economy Kevin Chief said in a news release.
Josh Brandon, chairman of Make Poverty History Manitoba, applauded the move.
“Families should not have to choose between having a home and putting food on the table,” he said in the release.
