Jonathon Naylor Editor Tom Goodman will retire this June as chief operating officer of HudBay Minerals, with company veteran Alan Hair replacing him as part of a managerial shakeup at Flin Flon's largest employer. The move comes just as HudBay prepares to announce what it calls 'the next chapter in our proud company history' _ with no clues provided as to what that will mean. Goodman's retirement was confirmed last week in a notice to HBMS employees, issued by HudBay CEO David Garofalo, entitled 'Organizational Changes within the Executive Management Team.' 'Tom Goodman, currently Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will be retiring in June after 34 years of superlative service to the Company,' wrote Garofalo. 'Tom has been a particularly valuable partner to me as we undertook a number of significant company-building initiatives over the last 18 months.' Goodman, a local product who graduated in chemical and metallurgical technology from the B.C. Institute of Technology, has worked for HBMS / HudBay in a variety of operational, technical and management positions. Board of directors Upon his retirement he will let his name to stand for election to the HudBay board of directors, which Garofalo said allows the company 'to continue to benefit from his profound experience and his deep network in Manitoba for many years to come.' Replacing Goodman as chief operating officer will be Hair, presently the company's senior vice president of business development and technical services. In addition to his current responsibilities for project development and HudBay's South America business unit, Hair will also oversee human resources, corporate social responsibility and the Manitoba business unit. Since joining HBMS / HudBay in 1996, Hair has held several management roles in the metallurgical plants. In 2004, he was appointed vice-president of metallurgy. See 'Hair...' on pg. 3 Continued from pg. 1 In 2010 Hair was elevated to the position of senior vice president of business development and technical services, at which point he moved from Flin Flon to Toronto to work out of the HudBay head office. Prior to hiring on with HudBay, Hair was smelting manager at MIM's zinc smelter in Avonmouth, England. He graduated from the University of Leeds, England with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in mineral engineering. In other changes, Ken Gillis, now the senior vice president of corporate development, will take on the added duty of generative exploration, in addition to his oversight of legal and corporate development. David Bryson, senior vice president and chief financial officer, will continue to be responsible for investor relations and corporate communications, financial reporting, treasury, marketing and information technology. The news comes as HudBay invites employees and select guests to 'celebrate the future of HudBay,' as a separate notice to employees put it, on Feb. 24. 'I am very pleased to invite you to join me and your colleagues from across the Americas for an exciting announcement that represents the next chapter in our proud company history,' wrote Garofalo in that notice, also issued last week. 'You may have heard that we've been taking a closer look at our brand to ensure that it continues to represent who we are and what we do as a company. 'We know that HudBay's success is a reflection of all our hard work. That's why we want you to be among the first to see how we will be moving forward together.'
