Creighton RCMP ended a slow month of January with a variety of arrests following assaults, mischief and other offences.
The detachment was called 78 times in the first month of 2019, with 33 of the calls coming from Creighton itself.
RCMP Sgt. Sean McPhee presented January’s detachment report to Creighton town council during the Feb. 13 council meeting, detailing offences and ongoing police matters.
One call to RCMP, filed as a mischief, caught the eye of police. Last month, an unknown male approached a woman near her home in Creighton. The woman ran away from the man, who followed her. Thinking quickly, the female jumped inside her vehicle and locked the vehicle’s doors, keeping the suspicious person away.
The suspect has not been identified or found by authorities, but McPhee said images from nearby surveillance videos have been sent to area detachments. McPhee described the man as slender with long hair and a “weird run.”
“We’re not going to give up on that one. We’re going to keep hammering that until we get something or there’s nothing else. That’s a bit much,” he said.
Three assaults were reported in Creighton, including two domestic assaults. Both calls ended with charges. The third case included a male fighting with another man over the first man’s ex-girlfriend.
“Jealousy is an evil demon,” quipped McPhee.
The new couple did not choose to press charges against the disgruntled former lover, but did ask police to issue a warning.
“So, we warned him,” said McPhee.
In total, 10 mischief calls were reported, including the case of the suspicious person approaching the vehicle. Most involved intoxicated people causing various issues. One call featured another man scratching a car that belonged to an ex-partner.
Other calls reported included phone fraud complaints and breaches.
Members of the detachment conducted a total of 101 curfew checks through January, adding four priority remands.
“Our known offenders, our big heavy hitters, they come back to town and we get them out of town. That’s keeping the stats pretty low,” McPhee said.
In Denare Beach, 44 calls came in to the detachment through January. Ten calls came from the Denare Beach municipality, including a break-and-enter to a garage, one instance of vandalism and a traffic accident.
The Amisk Lake reserve area, whose totals are compiled separately from the municipality, saw 34 calls, including one assault after one woman punched another woman. No charges were laid.
Eleven mischiefs were reported, along with a number of other assorted offences, including weapons charges and a missing persons case. The individual, who was reported missing by his mother, was located sleeping at his sister’s home not long after the report.
One file, a domestic assault, was reported in Sturgeon Landing. Charges were laid in the matter.
