A young man drowned last week after the canoe he was in capsized near Norway House. At about 4 a.m. last Wednesday, Aug. 15, Norway House RCMP and paramedics were dispatched to the shoreline in the Rossville area of the northern reserve. Mounties learned that four people were in a canoe when it capsized in the waves. Three of them were able to swim to shore while one, an 18-year-old Norway House man reported as a non-swimmer, did not. An RCMP officer and a local band constable boated to the location. The deceased was found submerged underwater. The victim was brought back to shore, where paramedics' efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful. The occupants of the canoe were not wearing life jackets. Alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor. Foul play is not suspected. The incident occurred on Little Playgreen Lake on the Nelson River system.
