Alcohol is considered a contributing factor after an 18-year-old man drowned in Norway House. At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Mounties were on patrol at the Fort Island Arena in Norway House, where a social was concluding. Police were alerted that a man, believed to be intoxicated, had gone into the Nelson River. Officers spotted the man with their flashlights and observed him swimming away from shore. Officers were able to make contact with the man to return to shore, but while he began swimming back toward shore, he disappeared underneath the surface. A Mountie and a local resident entered the water and searched for the man. He was found underwater about 50 feet from shore and taken back to shore. CPR was initiated by two other RCMP officers on scene until an ambulance arrived. The man was taken to the Norway House Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old from Cross Lake First Nation. His family has been notified. His name is not being released.
