At a Family Literacy Day event on Wednesday, Jan. 27, local musician Faith Krahn led children in a series of songs about reading, with help from library administrator Cindy McLean, outfitted as The Cat in the Hat.

One-hundred and fifty kids and adults headed to the Flin Flon Public Library for the recent Seusstastic Reading Rally, an event coordinated by the library and local literacy organization Read to Me.

Cindy McLean, library administrator, said the two organizations have held separate Family Literacy Day events in the past, but pooling their resources and their energies made this year’s reading rally a huge success.

“Last year we had 20-some kids,” said McLean. In contrast, the library’s basement was packed all afternoon with preschool-aged kids, including large groups from local daycares, along with their parents and teachers.

“A lot of parents were really engaged,” McLean said, noting that the Seuss theme was continued throughout various play stations featuring puzzles, games, tattoos and a spot inspired by the Seuss book Wacky Wednesday, where kids explored their silly sides.

Guest readers were also a highlight, with pint-sized book-lovers gathering around local celebrities like the Flin Flon Bombers and Flin Flon mayor Cal Huntley, who read popular Dr. Seuss stories.

Held Jan. 27, the event was sponsored by a number of local groups, and each attending child departed with a treat bag and a book of his or her own.
